Sunshine on Straloch

14th Sep 2014

The sun shone on Straloch in Strathardle as the audience gathered on Saturday afternoon in the Garden Studio to hear adventurer and travel writer Patrick Stevenson discuss his writing in 'Reports from Beyond'.

'Wherever I was, my eye was always drawn to the horizon'. This is how Patrick described his wanderlust [inherited from his intrepid mother] that drove his fascination with the cultures of very remote places and the people inhabiting these areas. A self-confessed 'water baby' with a deep love of rivers and oceans he is equally enchanted by the barren deserts of Central Asia and the frozen wastes of Siberia. He treated his audience with readings from his two books that describe his outer journeys and his inner journeys and introduced us to his various experiences such as shark worshipping in the Pacific and surviving the icy waters of Lake Baikal in winter. Patrick has developed his skills in surviving awkward situations and it became obvious from his books that it is not merely the places he visits that fascinate him but the people he is fortunate to meet on his travels. He admitted that the most essential item for any of his journeys is a phrase book of the local language - a few words is all it needs to get by!
