Fun-filled Storytelling with Nick Hesketh

18th Sep 2015

Children’s author, Nick Hesketh had his audience laughing and learning at the same time when he visited Blairgowrie’s Newhill Campus, earlier this month. Engaging the pupils immediately, he held their attention with humour and expressive storytelling.

Using an example of from own early storytelling, he showed them why this was not a good piece of writing. He then read a later edited version of the same humorous story which the children recognised as much improved. More importantly, they could identify why it was the better version.

With his great sense of fun and acting skills, Nick Hesketh managed to have the Newhill and St Stephen’s pupils rocking with laughter while, at the same time, learning key storytelling techniques. - the hallmark of a great teacher.

Praise from some of the Primary 6 & 7 children prove his visit was a memorable success. Here is a selection of their comments:

I really liked the way he acted out the stories he was telling. It made them come to life for me.’ – Alyssa

Nick’s talk was very entertaining. He showed us how enthusiasm and describing the setting carefully help our stories to make sense to others.’ – Caitlin.

Nick’s talk was fun and helped me with my ideas for my writing. I’m going to use the third person more in my stories to make them more interesting.’ – Hamish

Red of the Dead: Nick will be appearing at BOOKMARK on Friday, 2nd October when he’ll invite his young audience to learn ‘how to write a zombie story in ten shambling steps!’

A great time was had by all. We also enjoyed The Blairgowrie Players’ version of Whisky Galore at the Town Hall yesterday. Well done to all and the afternoon tea was delicious.
