17th Century Banffshire and a disgraced minister might seem an unlikely combination for an enthralling crime novel, but Shona (S G) MacLean, has all the talent to bring this time and place to life. Her five novels with Alexander Seaton as her ‘detective’ have gained her a high reputation for historical fiction, and for many they have the added bonus of being set in Scotland (and Ireland).  Shona was shortlisted for our Book of the Year last year, and is a judge on this year’s panel. Stephen O’Rourke, QC, starts his first novel The Crown Agent in Edinburgh 1829 and takes his main character Mungo Lyon, a man tainted by his association with Burke and Hare, on an exhilarating adventure to the Caribbean. A sequel is in the offing.
