Literary Lunch

Literary Lunch March 28 2020
(sponsored by the Faculty of Advocates)

BOOKMARK Book Festival began its tenth anniversary year in some style. On a gloriously sunny day at Ballathie House Hotel, Kinclaven, the renowned legal journalist and commentator, Joshua Rozenberg QC, well-known for his Radio 4 programme Law in Action and the only journalist ever to be made an honorary Queen’s Counsel, was our guest at BOOKMARK’s first Literary Lunch.

All 64 places for this had sold out very quickly, and after an excellent lunch, our Chair Mungo Bovey QC set the right tone with his questions. We all enjoyed listening to a wide-ranging and enthralling discussion. The audience was hooked by their deeply knowledgeable range and entirely engaging delivery of complex topics which included the importance of the UK being in the Council of Europe; the war in Ukraine and questions of War Crimes; the concise explanations of how law is set down by Parliament and whether judges have the capacity to change, or simply ‘umpire’ those laws. Their discussion was a stark reminder that trustworthy reporting and a robust and politically independent legal system are crucial to our society.

In his closing vote of thanks, Sandy Wylie said; ‘We have been treated to a real masterclass covering huge and important issues. I found myself thinking ‘why had no-one asked these questions before?’ then ‘why has no-one else answered those questions so clearly before now?’ Sandy quoted the final lines of Joshua’s book Enemies of the People? How Judges Shape Society: ‘Judges may be about the only friends we have’ and went on to say ‘It is clear that we all have many other friends with us today.’

Joshua then signed copies of his book, allowing many to have their own conversations with him.

BOOKMARK has gained a reputation for being a friendly, very well-organised Festival which goes the extra mile to look after its invited authors. Joshua and Mungo went very many extra miles to honour their commitment to us, having flown in from foreign parts only the day before this event. This level of support and enthusiasm for what we do is greatly appreciated.

Some comments from those present:
‘What a coup for BOOKMARK!’ ‘What an excellent event’ ‘Insightful and engaging guest speaker and thoughtful introduction, interviewer and vote of thanks.’
