Tom Devine
Writing Scottish History 1969-2025 Books featured: The Scottish Nation A Modern History; To the Ends of the Earth: Scotland's Global Diaspora; Independence or Union; The Scottish Clearances. Sir Tom Devine is a historian of Scotland and its Diaspora. He has written and edited over forty books on these and related themes plus numerous articles. He has held three professorial chairs at Strathclyde(where he was also Deputy Principal), Aberdeen and Edinburgh, as well as Visiting Professorships in the USA, Canada, New Zealand and Europe. Devine is the recipient of numerous honours and awards including the Royal Medal, Scotland's supreme academic accolade, all three prizes for Scottish historical research and the Lifetime Achievement Award in History and Archives of the UK Parliament. He has an OBE and was knighted 'for services to the study of Scottish history' by Queen Elizabeth II, the only scholar to have been so honoured. He is currently Sir William Fraser Professor Emeritus of Scottish History and Palaeography at Edinburgh.
