The Fell
The Fell by Sarah Moss (Pan Macmillan, 2021)

Fiction

This is a simple story, full of suspense. The book came out to lots of great reviews, but I was initially hesitant to read it. The story is set during one of the Covid lockdowns: did I really want to read about this yet? It is also largely told through the internal conversations of four characters: I like descriptive prose rather than streams of consciousness, don’t I? But the characters are intriguing, their voices are distinct, and the story is gripping: for reasons deep in her past, Kate (our main protagonist) can no longer bear being in the small cottage she shares with her teenage son; seeking space, she breaks the rules of self-isolation and walks up into the Peak District fells, only to find herself in great peril.
