Andrew Greig, poet, full time writer and ‘sometimes musician’ and described as ‘Scotland’s Renaissance writer’, won our 2022 Book of the Year Award for his fine novel, Rose Nicolson - Embra, winter of 1574. Queen Mary has fled Scotland, to raise an army from the French. Her son and heir, Jamie is held under protection in Stirling Castle. John Knox is dead. The people are unmoored and lurching under the uncertain governance of this riven land. It’s a deadly time for young student Will Fowler, short of stature, low of birth but mightily ambitious, to make his name.
Lesley Glaister is a novelist, poet and playwright and teacher of creative writing. Her first novel, Honour Thy Father (1990) won major awards. She will be discussing her new acclaimed novel, Blasted Things - the novel begins in 1917 in a casualty station on the Western Front. Clementina is a young auxiliary volunteer nurse. We learn she has a fiancé in England, a young doctor called Dennis who opposed her decision to join up, but her experience in France makes one wonder about how a marriage to Dennis may turn out.
