BOOKMARK Book Festival
Perthshire's Book Festival
2024 – here we come!
All of us at BOOKMARK are great optimists. Although 2023 sent us some challenges (cancellations to our Authors in Schools day, changes of speakers, floods which closed our second day of Festival) we are more than happy to put that year behind us and look ahead to what we are offering all our friends and supporters in 2024.
We have a packed and varied programme which, we hope, will offer something for everyone! Leading up to the Festival held at Blairgowrie Community Campus over the weekend of 5-6 October 2024, we have 3 other events in St Catharine’s Blairgowrie and a very special event in Perth Theatre.
Sunday 10 March is an appetiser for the opening of Perth Museum. Lord Stormont of Scone Palace will be taking us through the history of the Palace, its connections with the Stone of Destiny, and looking ahead to what the future holds. Jamie Jauncey will be in conversation with Lord Stormont.
Because Blairgowrie became something of an island during the floods last October, our AGM on Saturday 18 May will take us to our own Desert Islands. After the business is conducted, we’re going to be talking about our Desert Island Book; what it is and why it’s been chosen. All those coming along will be asked to submit their choice in advance – we’ve already had a few and this promises to be a highly entertaining afternoon!
Our Ticket Launch for the Festival will take place on Saturday 3 August. This afternoon aims to sum up BOOKMARK; friendly, welcoming and good fun! One of our Patrons, Olga Wojtas will read from her latest book Miss Blaine’s Prefect and the Gondola of Doom to author Ewan Morrison. If you’re not at this and live near St Catharine’s you will be able to hear the hilarity…

As a very special treat on the evening of 26 September, BOOKMARK is welcoming one of Scotland’s best loved writers to an event in the Joan Knight Studio at Perth Theatre. Sir Alexander McCall Smith, chaired by Magnus Linklater, will be giving us an unforgettable hour of reading, talk and a lot of laughter. Ticket details will be forthcoming nearer the time.
Save the dates of 5-6 October for our Festival at Blairgowrie Community Campus. All details will be revealed in August but the 10 events include first class novelists, talks on illustration, mountaineering, some history writers, a well-known comedian/writer.
And running alongside the above, our team work hard to put together our Authors in Schools, held at Rattray Primary School on 5 March this year. We run a short story competition at Blairgowrie High School for their senior pupils. We go once a month to Muirton Care Home to read poetry to their residents. We award a Book of the Year, (titles) this year judged by two Blairgowrie Book Groups and a senior teacher at Blairgowrie High School.
Aided and abetted by Blairgowrie Library, Adventure into Books and Booklore BOOKMARK is delighted to offer such rich and varied opportunities to anyone keen on reading, writing and listening! We look forward to welcoming you in 2024.
