BOOKMARK Book Festival
Perthshire's Book Festival
BOOKMARK 2025
BOOK OF THE YEAR AWARD
There was a fantastic turnout for a Meet the Author session hosted by the volunteer-run BOOKMARK Festival at the weekend.
Organisers of the popular Blairgowrie and Rattray Book Festival welcomed a capacity crowd to the St Catharine’s Centre in the East Perthshire town on Saturday where they enjoyed an entertaining talk with award-winning author Carys Davies.
Carys, who won the 2024 BOOKMARK Book of the Year Award for her acclaimed novel Clear, talked about the novel with Suzanne Graham from Blairgowrie High School’s English Department at the event, which also saw the launch of ticket sales for the main BOOKMARK festival in October.
Talking about her writing process and what sparks a story, Carys gave an insight into the historical context of her novels, how she tackles the agency of her female characters in that context, the influence of place on her characters, and how she likes to embed language into the feel of her novels.
Guests were also able to purchase ‘early bird’ discounted tickets for the autumn event and enjoyed a raffle and a tasty afternoon tea.
Gail said: “We were delighted to welcome the winner of our 2024 BOOKMARK Book of the Year Award Carys Davies to our Meet the Author event and to hear from her how she crafts her short but immensely powerful novels.
