Kate Davies' Book Selection for December 2024
At this time of year we get a lot of people coming into the bookshop asking what book we could recommend for a particular relative. I reckon the following would be well received.
It’s the season for ghostly tales, and The Winter Spirits by various authors, has 12 fabulous, glorious hauntings to entertain us; The Christmas Jigsaw Murders by Alexandra Benedict and a crime classic, Dramatic Murder by Elizabeth Anthony, originally published in 1948. Rounding off this month’s fiction recommendations is a coming-of-age novella – the perfect length for an afternoon curled up in a chair: The Party by Tessa Hadley.
On the non-fiction side, is Night Train to Odesa by Jen Stout, A recent Radio 4 book of the week, tells the stories of people caught up in the war in Ukraine. Next, a recommendation for armchair adventurers: A History of Polar Exploration in 50 Objects: from Cook’s Circumnavigations to the Aviation Age by Anne Strathie and finally, one to share: Cluedle: The Case of Rudolph’s Revenge.
More next month. Let me know if you have any recommendations you would like to share

PS: The Adventure into Books Book Blether group meets at 7pm on the first Wednesday of each month. On 4th December we have a theme evening: come and share a book you associate with gift giving (could be a book you received as a gift, one you gave as a gift, one about a gift….). All are welcome.
