Kate Davies' Book Selection for August 2024

It’s finally here – BOOKMARK’s Festival launch on 3rd August! Olga Wojtas will be here to tell us more about Miss Blaine’s Prefect and Shona’s latest escapade, and Gail Wylie will be confirming the line up for the October Festival. It’s a scorcher (unlike this weather)!

I’ve previously written of Olga’s latest book, Miss Blaine’s Prefect and the Gondola of Doom (ISBN: 9781913393878, paperback, Saraband, 2024), so suffice to say here that it is a brilliantly funny read and there will be copies to buy for signing on the 3rd August, along with some of Miss Blaine’s Prefect’s previous outings.

Of course, August has room for a few more recommendations, starting with Gail’s suggestion of James by Percival Everett;  Hannah Lynn’s Daughters of Olympus or Susie Dent’s debut novel, Guilty by Definition.   Another debut novel, newly published in paperback, is Frank and Red by Matt Coyne and finally, on a slightly indulgent note, Welcome to the Hyunam-Dong Bookshop by Hwang Bo-Reum - these are stories of people facing up to past disappointments and stepping into new openings: it is gentle and warming. Of course, other bookshop books are also available, but not (yet) one about Adventure into Books.

I hope you enjoy these recommendations. Do let me know if you have any suggestions to make for future lists.

PS: The Adventure into Books Book Blether group meets at 7pm on the first Wednesday of each month. On 7th August we will be blethering about Astronomer in Love by Antoine Laurain, which has a love story, an adventure and a zebra (of sorts). All are welcome.

PPS: On 28th August, Adventure into Books is hosting nature writer Keith Broomfield, talking about his latest book Wild Quest Britain. Get in touch with the bookshop if you would like to come along.
